PLANT BASED EATING

What are your suggestions for starting a plant-based diet?

First, we suggest to start by assessing the foods you already buy to see just how many of them are plant-based (you might be surprised!) Then, think about the foods you love and seek out their plant-based alternatives (this can help you transition to healthier eating that is free of animal products.) We also suggest reading up on plant-based foods on the internet. There are all kinds of simple, healthy, and delicious plant-based recipes and meals to get started with!

What are a few resources that will help me learn more about plant-based eating?

Check out Facebook pages, such as: Vegan Outreach, Being Vegan, Plant Based News, Vegan.com, and others to get information about plant- based eating and recipe ideas. A simple Google search can lead to plenty of plant-based information. Here is a website with a list of the Top 50 Vegan Blogs:

What are some great sources of plant-based protein?

Beans (black, garbanzo, pinto), lentils, chickpeas, oats, nuts, nut butters, seeds ( hemp, pumpkin, chia), soybean products (edamame, tofu, tempeh, seitan), certain vegetables (kale, broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts). There are also a number of protein powders available.

What are the benefits of eating plant-based?

There are numerous benefits. Health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and diabetes have been linked to animal product consumption. Studies have shown that plant-based eating leads to lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, less risk of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, helps reduce inflammation, and can help diminish tendinitis. In addition to health benefits, plant-based eating is also beneficial to the planet, as animal agriculture is one of the greatest sources of air and water pollution, as well as a major contributor to the depletion of natural resources. And of course, eating plant-based helps reduce the number of “food” animals that live miserable lives of confinement and torture.
